Oxfam is recruiting a Public Health Promotion (PHP) Assistant (m/f), to be based in Macomia, Mozambique.
Description

- Location – Macomia – Cabo Delgado
- Contract: 7 months contract upon donor grant confirmation
- Job Purpose: To implement activities at the field level that meet water, sanitation and hygiene needs for affected populations
Duties
Technical
- Take part in assessments for new locations and support in identifying key WASH priorities; Provide information regarding community structures, practices, beliefs and vulnerable groups
- Assist in the development and implementation of PHP activities
- Select and train Activistas in a defined geographical area, as defined by the PHP TL/Officer, including leading a small team in hygiene promotion specialisation and community volunteers
- Monitor their work on a daily basis
- Work with PHEs in latrine designs/ water point location and the operation and maintenance of facilities
- Conducting regular consultation with children’s, men and women including vulnerable groups as elders and people living with disabilities
- Collect and report community level programme information for submission to coordination mechanisms
- Conduct community level trainings to build partner and community capacity in emergency contexts
- Actively listen to communities and support them to design solutions to WASH and other public health issues
- Coordinate with local actors and others NGO/IGNOto ensure effective delivery of WASH programme activities
- Discuss and orientate community action plans in order to design a WASH programme
- Ensure regular feedback and understanding of context – especially related to hygiene practices/community belief and perceptions
- Ensure reporting and monitoring of activities according work plan and activities indicators
- Coordinate activities with colleagues in other sectors (PHE, Protection and Gender) to ensure coherent approach to beneficiaries
Management
- Manage the work of assigned Activists, taking responsibility for monitoring quality of work, resolving issues (with support of the officer where required) and required paperwork for payment
- Liaise with logistics and finance to ensure proper planning for equipment and materials required for public health promotion work
- Other: Eager and required to adhere to Oxfam’s principles and value as well as the promotion of gender justice and women's rights
- Understanding of and commitment to adhere to equity, diversity, gender, child safety and staff health and wellbeing principles
Requisites
- Competencies in communication and understanding of community dynamics are more essential than a formal qualification, however qualifications in public health, community health, social sciences or anthropology are highly desirable
- Strong communication skills and knowledge and experience in public health work are highly desirable
- Experience of working with NGOs in emergency response is also highly desirable
- Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as the commitment to equal opportunities
- Ability to demonstrate an openness and willingness to learn about the application of gender/gender mainstreaming, women’s rights, and diversity for all aspects of development work.
