EGPAF is recruiting an Associate Director of Research, to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.
Description
  • The Associate Director of Research is a senior management position within the Technical Departments reporting directly to the Technical Director. The Associate Director is expected to play a large and important role in providing leadership to carry out research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour. The role is based at EGPAF Maputo Office, but requires about 30% travel (within Mozambique)
Duties
  • Works collaboratively across the organization, and especially within the clinical division, to develop a comprehensive research agenda and to ensure that research results are translated into timely and valuable content for programs
  • Oversees the development and implementation of high quality primary and secondary research designed to enhance the effectiveness and impact of the Foundation programs
  • Oversees compliance of ethical standards in the implementation of research and evaluations
  • Oversees the dissemination and promotion of the Foundation research outcomes through relevant channels in liaison with the Communications Division, and assists the Foundation and partners in understanding and using research findings
  • Keeps regular contact via monthly conference calls with US-based headquarters research staff to update on the progress of evaluations
  • Develops and oversees partnerships that expand the Foundation’s ability to conduct and disseminate research of importance to the Foundation
  • Supervises research staff who report directly to this position and oversees hiring, ongoing coaching, feedback and support to build their capacity to further the mission of the organization
  • Develop and oversee budgets and policies and procedures for the Research Department
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requisites
  • PhD or MD with a significant health research element (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, (Bio) Statistics, etc.)
  • Health background (Knowledge and understanding of HIV prevention of mother to child transmission, maternal and child health, HIV care and treatment)
  • Eight or more years in research administration of research activities
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated experience with research methodologies required, including demonstrated ability to identify, collect, integrate, analyze, interpret and summarize a variety of quantitative and qualitative information
  • Academic credibility with a track record of active, high quality research and of leading research projects
  • Experience with state-of-the-art techniques in impact evaluations and proficiency in quantitative statistical analysis, with demonstrated experience in one or more of these softwares: Stata, SPSS, SAS, etc.
  • Ability to think and act strategically, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple projects
  • Ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of research and how research results can be delivered to partners and a wider scientific community
  • Excellent inter-personal and communications skills
  • Team player who can also work independently
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in Portuguese and English, able to communicate and influence a wide range of professionals from different organizations and backgrounds
  • A proven ability to manage a large and complex workload, working at times to short deadlines
  • Experience developing research protocols for IRB review and managing IRB correspondence and requirements
