Description
  • The Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to the humanitarian response team in the province of Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique
  • You will report to the Admin and Financial Associate in Pemba
  • Mozambique was hit by two devastating tropical cyclones affecting over 2 million people across 5 provinces. On March 14, tropical Cyclone Idai landed in Beira city, in Central Mozambique, causing massive destruction resulting from both flooding and strong winds to the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambezia, Tete and Inhambane. Sofala was hardest hit, followed by Manica, with reports that estimated 1.85 million people were affected. As of May 3, 603 deaths and more than 1,600 injuries have been reported by the Government On April 25, tropical Cyclone Kenneth landed in Cabo Delgado province in Northern Mozambique, with an estimated 250,000 people affected in Cabo Delgado and Nampula (official figures as of 3 May report that 226,997 people affected, but this is expected to increase). As of May 3, 41 deaths and more than 90 injuries have been reported by the Government
  • UNFPA is one of the few UN agencies on the ground in Pemba from the very outset of the two Cyclones, supporting the Government to respond to the humanitarian needs on the ground in alignment with the inter-agency cluster mechanism. UNFPA is co-leading the Protection Cluster together with UNHCR and leading the GBV sub-cluster and prevention of, mitigation and response to Gender-Based Violence at national and sub-national level in Cabo Delgado
  • To ensure UNFPA’s active participation, involvement and effective implementation of humanitarian actions in line with its mandate and the MISP, additional human resources were requested on surge to provide support to teams deployed in Beira and Pemba
  • The Driver is to be recruited to support Cabo Delgado (1) Province, to ensure the continuity of the emergency response and recovery. The Driver will be based in Pemba Offices and will report to the Programme Coordinator in the Pemba Sub office
Duties
  • Providing reliable and safe driving services by; driving office vehicles for the transportation of the humanitarian response team in Beira, high-ranking officials and visitors; delivery and collection of mail and documentation; meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, including managing visa and customs formalities when required
  • Keeping abreast of traffic and road and security and safety awareness to enable safe and on time arrival for meetings
  • Managing all aspects of vehicle maintenance; conducting minor repairs and cleaning; arranging for major repairs and service to ensure vehicle kept in good running condition; keeping daily vehicle logs; and assisting in the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and history reports
  • Acting as a translator in local language for official passengers, where necessary
  • Assisting the humanitarian response team with general administrative duties as required
Requisites
  • Completed Secondary Level Education
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Three years’ work experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy or UN system with a safe driving record
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies, local roads and conditions, and defensive driving skills
  • Skill in minor vehicle repairs
  • Working knowledge of the official UN language of the duty station
