The U.S. Embassy Maputo is recruiting an Economic Intern, to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.

  • The U.S. Mission in Maputo/Mozambique is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Economic Intern
  • As a member of the Political-Economic section, the Economic Intern will deepen the U.S. government’s understanding of economic topics in Mozambique, such as entrepreneurship, labor, investment, natural resources, environmental crimes, corruption, and other economic developments, and contribute to a strong U.S.-Mozambique bilateral relationship. The Economic Intern will conduct research, monitor current events, provide analysis and context, assist with writing and notetaking, and participate in meetings with contacts from civil society, international organizations, and government. The Economic Intern will sharpen analytical and writing skills, collaborate professionally in English and Portuguese with diverse teams, and gain foreign policy experience

  • WORK HOURS: Part-time; 20 hours/week
  • SALARY: Paid Internship
  • LENGTH OF HIRE: (6 months)
Duties
  • Researching and monitoring economic topics using a variety of sources, including media reports, academic papers, and/or reports published by civil society organizations
  • Preparing short written summaries or oral briefings on focus topics; conducting in-depth research, compiling statistics, and providing economic analysis on key projects to be developed in consultation with supervisor and Pol-Econ team
  • Attending meetings or briefings with the Pol-Econ team and other contacts and supporting outreach to new contacts
  • Tracking news and information related to annual reports on economic topics
  • Supporting other Pol-Econ events and projects as required
Requisites
  • Language: Portuguese (4/4 or higher) and English (3/3 or higher). (This will be tested) General computer skills – familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, ability to conduct research online
  • Education: Pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degree in political science, International Relations, Public Policy, or a related field of study, with at least one year of a bachelor’s degree completed
  • Experience: Academic or professional work related to economics, environmental issues, business, international affairs, or related topics, and experience living or working outside of Maputo are useful but not required
