Grindrod is recruiting a General Manager, to be based in Nacala, Mozambique.
Duties
- To effectively manage allocated contracts, ensure profitability and meet ongoing performance and key performance indicators as set out by respective contractual SLA’s; To grow the business organically and also outside current market and industries
- Financial Management:
- Cost control within budget parameters
- Ensure invoicing of revenue according to contractual agreements on various contracts
- Produce a budget for the contract annually
- Review and manage budget quarterly
- Review and update daily forecasts on revenue tracker and KPI dashboards
- Debtor and Creditors management
- Manage the day to day costs of the contract. i.e. tyres, fuel, fleet
- Ensure the operation is profitable by influencing day to day activities to meet budget
- Collate and submit a full month end report (revenue pack)
- Critical Outcomes:
- Analyse and monitor revenue, cost and profit and implement corrective and preventative strategies to achieve budget targets
- Manage compliance on the audit reports
- Forecast, developing objectives, developing strategies, programming, scheduling, budgeting, developing policies and developing procedures & processes
- Operations Management and Operational Excellence
- Planning, Organising, Leading, Controlling
- Meet Service Level Agreement required for each contract
- Maintain and monitor operating Processes and Procedures and identify solutions to solve any deviations from operating processes and procedures
- Identify improvement opportunities and deliver on improvement opportunities
- Analyse operational data and benchmarks internally and externally
- Develop and implement risk mitigation plans and keep updated
- Prepare and submit general and monthly reports
- Operate the contract to ensure compliance for all internal and external audits
- Comply with corporate governance

- Internal Audit and Customer Audit results in line with Business Unit targets
- Business Development and Marketing:
- Arranges annual customer audits
- Communicates service level achievements to all parties
- Understands the Company’s business plan and implements a marketing strategy around this plan
- Understands the customers supply chain and offers markets value adding services
- Develops business models
- Develops strong relationship with customers at the appropriate level
- Monitors customer service levels (applies preventative and corrective strategies and actions

- Grow business not only in current market but aim to diversify operations to maintain profitability
- Customer Relations Management:
- Ensure and maintain an ongoing operational working relationship with the customer
- Create an environment of customer intimacy
- Manage Service Level Agreements with customers

- Thorough understanding of the relevant contracts and customer requirements and SLA’s
- HR/IR/Staff Management:
- Manage the onsite operational processes in terms of Policies & Procedures, Performance Management, Training & Development, Recruitment, Manpower Planning, Discipline, etc.
- Create an effective working environment, and set a tone for the management of contracts
- Represent the company and embrace the Grindrod culture
- Conducts periodic performance evaluations in accordance with company requirements
- Plans and approves leave for all direct reports
- Evaluates resource deployment and takes appropriate corrective action
- Performs disciplinary interviews and enquires when required
- Performs job interviews and participates in candidate selection

- Ensure effective management and deployment of all staff aligned to Company requirements and standards
- Relationship with the stakeholders
- Vehicle Maintenance:
- Manage and monitors and all planned vehicle maintenance activities
- Manage and monitors and vehicle availability and takes corrective action as required
- Provides feedback to Management regarding condition and future maintenance requirements related to the national fleet
- Liaises with National Maintenance Manager on fleet maintenance and costs
- Performs ad-hoc vehicle inspections and audits
- Report the fleet status and down-time daily to the COO and CEO
- Critical Outcomes:
- Maintenance standards, policies, procedures compliance and all regulatory requirements are met and adhered to at all times; Fleet standards are maintained at all times and optimised use of human resources
- Minimise down time, maximise fleet availability, track daily spending, budgets are adhered to and appropriate management of all company assets, resources, infrastructure and inventory under your direct control
Requisites
- Management Degree or related areas
- Tertiary Qualification in Logistics/Transport/Supply Chain
- Effective financial management and reporting
- Efficient operations management and reporting
- Effective and pro-active management of customer relationships
- Effective management of safety, health, environment risk and quality legislation and procedures
- Effective management of human resources
- Knowledge of relevant Labour Legislation
- Fluent in English/Portuguese
- Solid Information Technology
- 8-10 Years transport management experience
- Sound knowledge of logistics, warehousing and distribution
- SHERQ Management
- Marketing/Business development – organic and new business and industries

- Optimised utilisation of resources
- Strong report writing skills (Excel and Word)
- SAP MM experience advantageous
