World Health Organization is recruiting a National Professional Officer/Malaria Entomologist, to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.
Duties
- Serve as the primary liaison for malaria vector control between the MOH and WHO
- Provide technical support to the NMCP in rolling out malaria vector control interventions
Contribute to the creation of a database for insecticide resistance (IR) and vector mapping
- Conduct training for vector control officers and other staff in
Entomological surveillance
- Field entomological work including mosquito identification and collection, preservation and transport, maintenance of field insectaries, conducting bioassays, vector susceptibility and insecticide resistance monitoring
- Vector control interventions (IRS, LLINs, LSM)
- Participate in planning, review, implementation and monitoring of national malaria strategic and operational plans
- Support the control of other disease vectors (Dengue; Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, Zika, Rift Valley Fever) in the context of IVM
- Establish an entomological surveillance system in selected sentinel sites through ensuring routine timely and complete data collection, create and regularly update a data base for entomological surveillance and write concise reports
- Ensure that NMCP field teams follow all WHO approved guidelines, protocols and techniques for mosquito collection and test
- Participate in field entomological activities
- Promote stronger collaboration and coordination between the NMCP and others malaria control and elimination initiatives (MOSASWA, E8 and MALTEM)
- Any other duties as assigned by the WHO Representative
- The entomologist is part of the Communicable Diseases Cluster of the WHO Country Office in Mozambique
- S/he will work under the overall supervision of the WHO Representative, in direct collaboration with the program officer for malaria and with guidance of the disease prevention and control officer
- The entomologist will work closely with the malaria program manager and vector control focal points of the MoH
- S/he will be supported by the Malaria Unit and Public Health and Environmental (PHE) Program from the Inter Country Support Team, Harare and the Regional Office, Brazzaville
Requisites
- University degree in biology or health related, with post-graduate degree in entomology
- Previous experience in a field and laboratory relevant to entomology
- Producing results

- Building and promoting partnerships across the organization and beyond
- Sound knowledge of the principles, practice, methodology and techniques in entomology, epidemiology, public health
- Proven field experience on malaria vector surveillance and monitoring and evaluation
- Ability to collect, analyse and use data for program monitoring and evaluation
- Strong skills in data analysis and technical report writing
- Ability to work with partners proactively, including effective chairmanship of stakeholder meetings on vector control management
- Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, programs for data management or analysis)
- At least seven years of experience in the management of malaria vector control at national and regional level, with at least five years field experience on malaria vector surveillance and monitoring and evaluation
- Proven skills in training and human resources development in entomology
- Portuguese: Excellent knowledge. English: Intermediate knowledge
