• WaterAid is looking for an experienced individual to play a vital role in contributing towards our mission to transform lives with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene in poor and unserved communities. The position will be stationed in one of our country offices in Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique, with frequent travel throughout Southern Africa region as well as periodic international travel
• Reporting to the Country Director, the Public Health Advisor is to lead the delivery of the Public Health and WASH programming, in line with WaterAid Country and Global Strategy. The role also develops key partnerships for the delivery of WASH and Health programming across countries and region. The role supports country and regional teams in providing overall technical advice, guidance, development, and design of impactful, high-quality inclusive, gender responsive and innovative WASH and Health programme interventions. S/he will also provide technical support and lead in the achievement of its influencing outcomes This role focuses on developing an interface between WASH and Health programming and strengthening health systems and policy, in the context of ensuring public healthcare facilities have sustainable and safe WASH services to improve public health outcomes, integrating inclusive and effective hygiene behaviour change interventions into core public health programmes, and ensuring WASH is prioritised in national health development policies, strategies, budgets and plans

Duties

• Specifically, the Public Health Advisor, will be responsible for the following amongst others:
• Provide WASH & health programme direction and technical advisory services on strategic positioning
• Accelerate innovation in the WASH & Health thematic focus
• Support Country teams to strengthen health systems and ensuring integration of sustainable and safe WASH services in all public healthcare facilities that are also gender responsive and meets or exceed national targets
• Support Country teams on the strategic development and implementation of evidence-based, innovative, inclusive, and effective hygiene behaviour change interventions that are integrated into core public health programming at scale to achieve sustained changes across critical hygiene behaviours
• Support Country teams to ensure WASH is prioritised in national health policies, strategies, budgets, and plans

Requisites

• A master’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Health Policy & Management from a recognized university. Those with a degree in Medical Sciences will have an advantage
• Minimum 7 years of demonstrated practical experience in Health and/or behaviour change programming (especially in Public/Preventive Health) in Southern Africa region
• Proven experience in health systems strengthening, policy and advocacy and leading campaigns’ design and delivery
• Experience in design and implementation of integrated programmes and experience in leading development of WASH and health models and approaches and packaging for learning
