AMPCM in partnership with Norges vel, the Norwegian agency for development is recruiting a Manager of the Namaita Nursery and Food Security Demonstration Farm (m/f), to be based in Nampula, Mozambique.
Description
- To contribute to the mass production and planting of cashew seedlings in Mozambique, the Namaita nursery, an enterprise of the Namaita AgriCooperative, intends to produce 1 million cashew trees annually by 2026. In addition to on-site compost production and experiments with intercropping, agroforestry, and symbiotic plants that gives high cashew yields and maximum overall food production. The site and experiences will be used to build training and demonstration capacity so that the nursery becomes central to the regions micro-nursery owners in terms of learning, business orientation and practical support
Duties
- Plan and manage the establishment of infrastructure and processes for seedling production.
- Planting and management of scions sources (clonal plantations) for seedlings production in the nursery
- Oversee pilot production of polyclonal cashew seedlings.
- Plan and monitor cashew seedling production based on actual and expected order numbers
- Plan and monitor seedling production of other fruit-, nut and trees with important local function. (nutritional food, N-fixing ability, energy, building material or other functions)
- Relationship building in the region: establish/negotiate partnerships with external actors
- Organize the establishment of infrastructure and processes for the production of compost
- Planning, implementation and management of 8-10 demonstration farms (0,5 - 1ha) with specific agronomic frameworks
- Budget management
- Coordinate nursery staff daily; instructions and follow-up
- Coordinate farming staff daily; instructions and follow-up
- Be a resource/contact person for the micro-nursery owners
- Technical assistance on the seedlings production in the micro-nurseries
- Relationship building in the region: establish/negotiate partnerships with external actors, suppliers and customers of the cooperative
- Plan and implement maintenance of infrastructure
- Plan and host farmers’ associations and cooperatives for demo-days
- Monthly reporting to cooperative’s steering committee and strategic partners (e.g. Government)
- Development and management of the database on seedlings production, distribution and planting, including information on farms and farmers monitoring
- Collaboration with the public services on training, seedlings production, distribution, planting and reporting
- Participation in events regarding cashew promotion in the province
Requisites
- Minimum 5 years of experience as either farm manager or nursery manager
- Other relevant experience:
- Compost production
- Production manager farm/green house
- Production in Hydroponics systems
- Farms and farmers management
- Activities monitoring and evaluation
Qualifications
- Min. B.Sc. degree or similar education in the natural sciences such as: Agronomy, Agroecology, Ecology, Biology, Permaculture, Forest Engineering
- Min B.Sc. requirement not necessary if a candidate has long (15 years) experience in a relevant field
- Computer literacy. Excel, databases, email, etc.
- Driving License
- Personal:
- An interest in agroecological farming practices, circular economy, sustainable production methods
- The ability to motivate and manage a team of workers to achieve our shared vision
- Well structured and good planning skills
- Problem solving skills
- Excellent communication skills. Portuguese and English required – Fluency or knowledge of local languages spoken in northern Mozambique positive for candidate
