WCS is recruiting a Senior Accountant, to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.
Description
- Reports to: Finance Director
- Job Purpose: The Senior accountant will be responsible for financial accounting and performing daily office tasks
Duties
- Ensure accurate and documented accounting as per the GAAP, WCS and donors requirements
- Review and post all journal vouchers, including adjustments, expenditure to all projects on the accounting system on a regular basis: weekly
- Follow up and review liquidation of purchase/travel advances. Review Outstanding advances, including aging to employees, review and correct wrong coding
- Perform monthly cash count and surprise cash counts
- Provide documents for the update of asset inventory list to the asset management responsible and reconcile periodically the asset list with the information in the accounting system
- Allocate monthly prepaid, payables
- Reconcile and keep track of all balance sheet accounts monthly
- Prepare and submit the monthly file and year end close files within the organization deadlines and requirement. To ensure that accurate monthly accounts including cash, accounts receivable, accounts payables and bank reconciliations together with relevant documentation are prepared in accordance with the organization’s deadlines/requirements
- Ensure all accounting files are properly organized and documentation is accounted for
- Support to ensure internal control systems and procedures are being adhered to and maintained in accordance with the WCS guidelines
- Collaborate extensively with internal and external auditors, during the preliminary and end audit processes and for donor financial reviews
- Ensure compliance with the organization policies, donor requirements, local law and statutory requirements., the WCS operations comply with procurement, tax, payroll, reporting and other financial policies, relevant laws and regulations and all tax and social security are paid within the time set
- Ensure that accurate weekly and monthly Cash and Bank Controls together with relevant documentations are in accordance with the organizations datelines and requirements
Correctly review the coding of all vouchers according to the procedures of the different donors (WBS, GRANT, EMPLOYEE, Ref. K3), to ensure that they are in compliance before they are entered in the accounting system
- Support in the preparation of the annual/grant audit and furnishing of the supporting documents to the Auditors
- Support the Maputo and Field Offices on matters relating to finance with travel to the field offices
- Assist in the disbursement process. Ensure that appropriate authorization and documentation is obtained for all expenditure prior to upload into the accounting system
- Supervision of the Cashier/Accounts Assistant
- Work in close collaboration with the field offices finance person to ensure consistency of transactions posted in the accounting system
Requisites
- Advanced Degree in Finance, Business, Economics or other related field preferred
- Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in financial and operational/strategic management (budgeting, accounting, auditing) of donor funded projects
- Minimum of three years of supervisory experience, including direct supervision and mentoring of a team of staff
- Demonstrated knowledge of one or more bi-lateral donors’ rules, regulations, and policies (USAID, DFID, EU, UN Agencies, etc.)
- A willingness to travel to the field offices and ability to work to tight deadlines
- Ability to collect and analyze financial data and produce coherent reports for donors and suppliers
- Ability to employ flexibility and creative when faced with challenges
- Competent at working with teams and staff/contacts that may be in different locations, eg headquarters staff, local office staff and regionally based staff
- Proficient in accounting software - Sun/SAP Systems
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point and preference for Access)
- Ability to work with minimum supervision and in a multicultural setting
- Fluency in Portuguese and English required
