SNV is recruiting a Storyteller Consultant, to be based in Nampula, Tete and Zambézia, Mozambique.
Description
- SNV has partnered with the Master Card Foundation (MCF) in a 5 year project that aims to stimulate Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE) in Mozambique. The OYE project facilitate the rural youth (aged 18-30 years, 40% women) to access opportunities in the growing agribusiness sector
- The opportunities come in the form of formal and selfemployment, entrepreneurship and small scale commercial farming
- The strategic OYE approach consists of:
- Targeting growth oriented and demand driven markets with concrete potential for (self)employment creation (PULL)
- Skills and capacity development of youth to capitalize upon local market dynamics (PUSH)
- Linking of youth to market opportunities for employment and/or small enterprise development (MATCH)
- The OYE project target group is exclusively rural and underprivileged youth, who generally lack opportunities to access meaningful (self) employment opportunities. The youth are guided through a trajectory that includes developing appropriate life, business, technical and entrepreneurship skills that position them to be linked to concrete market opportunities created by/through players in the agri-business sector as well as end markets. - Objective of the assignment:
- OYE Mozambique intends to engage a qualified and experienced consultant/story writer to produce a good narration of the OYE project from the beginning of implementation until the end. The OYE project was implemented in three provinces of Nampula, northern Zambézia
and Tete
- The story is expected to capture key activities evolved and were realised. These include market opportunity identification, youth skills development, creation of strategic partnerships with key private sector companies and other partners in various value chains, the establishment of youth led enterprises, internships and self or formal employment creation
- The storyteller has to outline explicitly conspicuous changes that happened in the youths’ lives. The story has to be exhilarating and presented in continuous prose and be captivating to average readers
- Duration: The consultant/story teller will write the OYE story in 30 working days starting from 1 April 2018
Duties
- Elaborate an interesting, straightforward but comprehensive narration of the OYE story from its inception to the end of the project in July 2018
- Carry out some desk review that includes reading of project documents, project reports, mid-term evaluation reports, photos/videos bank and other information that the storyteller may solicit
- Carry out field visits to meet some youth, private sector and other partners to aide capturing the story, including some inspiring quotes that show the impact of the project
- Hold interviews with key OYE project staff and management, field supervisors, trainers, at least one representative of the steering committee, provincial and district government partners, youth
leadership, local community leaders and some private sector companies
- Deliverables: After a debriefing and review of reports, produce a preliminary report of how the storytelling assignment will be carried out
- Draft OYE story shared with OYE team for comments and input
- Final story submitted to the Project Manager
Requisites
- Extensive experience in writing, including publications and/or at least one book
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Extensive experience and knowledge of Mozambican context
- Track record of writing in (youth) employment development/market development/private sector in Mozambique
- Advanced degree in Social Science, Development Economics, Business, Agriculture, and other relevant fields
- Ability to facilitate and relate to stakeholders at multiple levels (staff, NGOs, public and private employer organizations, youth participants, etc.)
- Sensitivity to cultural/historical context
- Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully bring youth/client experiences to the forefront of the story
- Fluency in reading and writing in both languages (Portuguese and English) required
